Making a House a Home – Day 1

by admin on 01/11/2010

Today is Day #1 of okay-so-this-is-really-for-real-we-have-actually-bought-a-new-house-and-we’re-moving Day! It was just what the doctor…a.k.a…my great and faithful Lord ordered to keep this heifer from going crazy waiting for labor. I am 36 weeks and 6 days pregnant and so enjoying racing against my body to see who will win. Which house will I bring the baby home in? I don’t know. And how exciting is that? We picked up our keys to the house yesterday and got to see it empty for the first time. It was surreal. The kids ran around like crazy wild monkeys and it was the start to making it really feel like our home. Throw in a nursing infant and our tornado-like messes of homeschooling, snacks, video games and toys galore and I know it will feel as if we have always lived there.

This coming Saturday is the day we get the UHAUL truck and move all of our big furniture with the help of a crew of the most wonderful friends to be blessed with. Until then and all week long, we are moving the little stuff and all the things that my waddling behind can handle. This evening is phase one of IKEA-palooza where my Dad and I are joining forces and power drills to begin assembly of all the flat-packed dining room chairs and dressers from the bestest store in the world. Who doesn’t love hours devoted to doughs, cam locks and a miniature allen wrenches? I know I do. And there is no sarcasm in that statement. My brain needs the distraction and excitement right now of those IKEA instructions with no words and the satisfaction of completion once the last screw is tightened. I’ll be so engrossed that I might just forget I’m pregnant.

Jason, my mom, the kids and I headed to the house yesterday afternoon and I took pictures of the empty space Pre-Ruda-Family. We’re going to spend this week praying over the house and making it our own. At double the square footage of our current home, it will swallow us and our furniture and the kids looked like little ants in it yesterday. But it’s absolutely perfect for us and our growing family I just cannot wait to step out of the current transition season and really enjoy the simplicity of my family.
