This is the stuff that dreams are made of:
It’s the secret to transforming all of the hideous laminate furniture in the world. Seriously. Why throw it away?
Zinsser oiled based primer is like gold. The con is the clean-up. You need mineral spirits to clean your brush, but it’s quick and easy. Just stinky.
And the best part? NO SANDING. Not a lick. Don’t even touch your sandpaper. Unless you want to distress your edges a bit. Then by all means.
You can put this primer over anything. Absolutely anything. Laminate. Glossy paint. Metal. It’s awesome. It cures like a rock overnight and gives a perfect base for whatever latex color you fancy.
Here’s the before: The typical and ever-so-popular IKEA malm dresser in bachelor pad black
So, you need:
Zinsser oiled based primer – remember, no need to sand. Sanding is for sissies. All the cool people don’t sand.
latex paint in whatever color floats your boat – my go-to white is Valspar Signature in Mineral Ash in semi-gloss
poly – I love Minwax water based polycrylic in satin. It seals like a champ overnight.
For this dresser, I did two coats of primer and let it cure overnight. I did sand lightly before the latex to get rid of the little paint nubs. Two coats of latex paint. Two coats of poly. Added hardware. Done!
